A lot of times people who are onto a gluten free diet (and looking for things about gluten free vodka) are really looking for a low carb diet, and trying to take it all the way. These people usually are not looking for gluten free vodka for anything so much as celiac disease or any food allergies, but instead are just trying to stay trim, fit, and active. So they’ve embraced a low-carb, low-gluten (what some call “paleo”) diet. For this I say, great job! Come aboard and come over to the Gluten Free Vodka side! It’s all about living a smart, healthy, fun life, for all of us! So you’re headed to a party, but you have not eaten any sugar or any carbs all this week. Still, you want to drink. So what’s the choices?
While I would say the best solution is to take some shots of gluten free vodka (since I love vodka), and have a nice night. No one drinks vodka straight and keeps their head anymore, it used to be such a divine, classy choice. But I digress…the problem with drinking vodka, if you are concerned about staying carb-free, is that most people mix vodka with sugary drinks like red bull and colas. So, vodka might not be the top choice, unless you want to be cool and drink it on the rocks, like me…
Many people also say that 100% agave tequila is the best choice. I can agree with this 100% (get it!). The original-recipe margarita is a very low carb drink, and not the sugary margarita-mix kind that you get in bars and in bottles at the grocery. These were invented to sell cheap margaritas in bars. The original margarita is in the “sour” class of drinks, as in “whiskey sour” and goes like this easy ratio – 3-2-1.
Thus, here’s a good quick, low carb and gluten free recipe:::
- 3 ounces of 100% agave tequila
- 2 ounces of Cointreau (or use Patron Orange which has the same proof and complexity but is much cheaper, about half the price. Don’t use triple sec for this!
- 1 ounce of fresh-squeezed lime juice.
Salt the rim and serve on the rocks. An even better thing to do is a few shakes of salt into it as you mix it and forget salting the rim.
The whole thing has about 10 grams of carbs which comes from the orange liqeuer. Leave out that orange liquer for an even less carb-heavy drink. Or, just come with the gluten free vodka from Tito to really do it the right way!
